For a while it was the worst service station around by a country mile, but Bolton West is currently being rebuilt. On the 23rd July there was a fire at the southbound services which means there is currently no fuel available.

Trivia

Bolton's main claim to fame is that it starred in Peter Kay's pilot episode for his sketch show 'That Peter Kay Thing' in the early 2000s. The show was a 22-minute mockumentary titled 'At the Services' which took a look at a typical day at Bolton West, including manager Pearl Harbour's quest to impress a celebrity. It's thought that they filmed here because they were the only services to let him, but it seems to be quite a coincidence that most of Peter Kay's films are made in or around the Bolton area.

It used to be owned by BP, with the main facilities being leased out to First, but Euro Garages (who specialise in taking over unpopular petrol stations) took over the petrol station and have recently taken over the whole site. The services are due to be rebuilt, but this has been on the cards for over a year.

This part of the page usually tries to remain neutral, but there really is no other way of putting this: it is appalling. Sure enough, it's the lowest-rated service station on this site, with a shocking average of 1.1 out of 5.

I went past Bolton West today for the first time in months! All of the signage still refers the service area as being a "First" site; neither the on-site signage or the HA's signs on the motorway itself are yet to be changed over.

I don't think so, and I can't find it on Travelodge's website.

I'm a bit confused about the Travelodge at these services, I've seen a photo of and a poster above mentioned it now being called Rivington Lodge after Travelodge left it. However Travelodge are still advertising it as one of their hotels and allow you to book it, have they re-bought the hotel? :o

Hi Bryn,

The planning application made it through, we followed it up in this thread where you can view the plans for yourself (though it looks like the Planning Portal isn't working at the minute).

Good to see some work is finally happening on the ground!

Looks like demolition of Bolton West has started now - the southbound services appears to be slowly losing the back end of the amenity building.

Who knows, now EuroGarages are finally building their Starbucks DriveThru in Blackburn they might have finally decided to rebuild this dump too... did anyone ever work out what happened to their planning permission?
