Trivia and History

McDonald's restaurant building and sign.
The McDonald's end of the forecourt shop.

The site is positioned on the site of Buck Barn Farm, which later became an engineering works. It was in the corner of an important crossroads, and was developed by Margram to became a service area in the 1970s. The original line of the crossroads is now part of the McDonald's car park.

The filling station was previously branded Total. They planned to redevelop the site to include a restaurant and a hotel in 1991, but that plan was later withdrawn.

Petromar redeveloped the site in 2001. They demolished the former Total filling station and building a new one, now branded BP, with an attached Somerfield store. The new sales building included the inter-connected McDonald's Drive Thru restaurant. The external layout is also unusual: it has a standard direct access from the A24 northbound, for which it is a service area, but it also has an entry from the A272 which wraps around the back of the site.

The forecourt was rebranded to Texaco in 2009, with the store rebranding to Co-op Food in 2010 after Somerfield was acquired by The Co-operative Group. The filling station later passed to Asda, following their acquisition of the Co-op filling stations, rebranding to Asda Express on 26 January 2024.

Over time, the Buck Barn Crossroads has been shortened to one word. A sign on the refurbished Co-op faƧade now welcomes customers to 'Buckbarn', although McDonald's still spell it as Buck Barn.
