Trivia and History
This service area was a slightly speculative development. The N3 was proposed to be upgraded to the M3, and the development assumed it will become a full motorway service area on the new road. The building is officially branded M3 Mulhuddart Services.
It is currently located off a small, unnumbered side-turning on the eastbound (inbound) carriageway of the N3 at Parslickstown Junction. The N3 upgrade now looks unlikely to happen, but most customers won't notice the difference.
The building was built on 2.5 acres of greenfield land on the edge of Damastown. It was developed by Weslin Construction for Maxol, who then worked with The Lidon Group of Junction 14 Mayfield to open it. It opened on 31 March 2016.
It opened with Maxol fuel and a Mace branded sales shop, with units along the back row offering Supermac's, Maxol's deli brand 'Moreish', Maxol's first ever Insomnia branch and the first ever Chopped in a petrol station. A dining area and toilet block are provided on the top row.
Initially the Maxol and Mace brands were mainly used. In 2019, the Mace branding was removed and Moreish became 'Maxol Deli'. The 'M3 Mulhuddart' name started to be promoted more than Maxol.
Although the shops and restaurants close at night, a paypoint for the fuel and a separate toilet block remain available. The place has its own slogan: at the heart of great food.
The service area won Ireland's Forecourt of the Year in 2016 and 2021.
