Old Inns is little more than a petrol station and a restaurant, which had a stroke of luck: first it was signed from the old A80 as a service area, and when that became a motorway, it received signs from the new motorway too.

Trivia and History

A hut building branded Old Inns Café.
The Old Inns Café, in its new building on the old exit slip road.

Old Inns started as a filling station built next to the north-eastbound carriageway of the new A80, close to Old Inns Farm. Access was also provided to the B816. This meant traffic heading south-west could access the filling station by driving around the two loops at Old Inns Interchange to join the A80 northbound, and then return by taking the B816 back to the interchange.

The Cumbernauld branch of Little ChefHistory opened alongside the filling station in February 1984. This gained a Burger King in 1998. Despite reportedly high levels of trade, the branch closed in 2007 as Little Chef felt it was unprofitable, most likely due to a previous decision to sell the land to raise cash. The former restaurant building then reopened as a Chinese buffet restaurant called 'Silk Cottage', but this closed in 2017. The building is now home to the Milano Express Pizza and Burger Restaurant.

When the A80 was replaced by the M80 in 2011, the signs for the service area were replaced with blue ones. The direct access from the dual carriageway was closed and instead all traffic had to enter and leave via the rearranged Old Inns Interchange. This is probably now the smallest service area to be signed from a UK motorway.

Around the same time, the forecourt was redeveloped with the flow turned around, to match the new road layout.

The Old Inns Café was later added to the restaurant car park in 2011 in a small hut. A hand car wash was also added on the former car park exit slip road in 2012, but this was replaced in 2017 when the Old Inns Café relocated into a larger wooden lodge building.

Milano Express temporarily closed on 28 August 2023, due to rising costs of running the business. This closure is until further notice. They also hold planning permission to convert the building into a takeaway-only restaurant featuring various takeaway offerings.

Shell currently hold planning permission to add four Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging bays to their forecourt.
