MSO Home - Operators - Kenning Motor Group

Kenning Motor Group built and operated over 100 petrol forecourts and two motorway services: Anderton (now Bolton West) and Strensham. The former was sold to Granada (now First) and the latter to Take a Break (now RoadChef). Interestingly, Strensham is one of the most profitable motorway service in the country whilst Bolton West has, for many years, been regarded as the worst service station in the country.

Kenning quit the motorways business to focus on being a car manufacturer, and they're still going today under the name GK Ford.

Strensham on a 1965 postcard

In 1965 motorway services were exciting and Kenning, like all the operators at the time, released postcards advertising them. This one shows Strensham and on the back Kenning describe themselves as "Britain's largest Motoring Service", carefully hiding the fact that they only had two service stations at the time.
