Factfile:
Motorway: A1(M)
Junctions: Between J36 and J37
Location: South Yorkshire DN57
Other names: none
Date planned: unknown
The A1(M) here is one of the oldest stretches of motorway in the country, connecting the high-ish speed A1 at either end. Because of this, it's hard to tell exactly how necessary these services would have been.
The motorway here is in a cutting so the services would have been at a higher level than the road, which would probably improve things slightly for visitors but take up more space.
Today, the service area is used as a works depot.

The A1(M) looking north, the service area should be ahead. Those sliproads become two lanes wide, however to get to the actual works depot you have to use the left one and turn off or else you'll end up back on the motorway. Photo taken in 2006.
Both sides of the works unit have a 'secret exit' for authorised users to access the motorway. Give it a new coat of paint and this would look like any genuine service area secret exit. Photo taken in 2006.
Looking into the service area, where it has been transformed into a busy works unit. This is a good 350 yards from where the services were actually supposed to be, but it's the closest we're allowed on foot. Photo taken in 2006.
On the road now, and this is where traffic should be leaving and entering the services. You can easily imagine that sign reading "Sprotbrough services". Photo taken whilst travelling southbound in 2006. |
