KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) have found themselves at a lot of the larger [[Welcome Break]]s, as well as a couple of refurbished old ones. It is alleged that today, having KFC on the motorway is just the same as in the high street, and as a result it has proven very popular with travellers. It is often paired up with [[Burger King]].

For a short while Welcome Break started painting their services red, to advertise KFC. Services with KFC are also advertised rather sneakily from the motorway, because Welcome Break have change their logo to read "Welcome Break KFC".

They are also at the newer [[Extra]] services and have also recently been introduced to a [[Moto]] service station, [[Hilton Park]]. Most of there restaurants are open until 10pm-11pm now - check the website to be sure.

Squashed in on the M6 between J10a and J11, Hilton Park is a large and very busy service area not far from Birmingham.

Hilton Park has a lot to answer for. Its location is the main reason why J10a only faces south, and it has also meant that a whole new dual carriageway has had to be proposed to link the M54 to the M6 Toll. For a while it was to be closed so that junction improvements could take place either side, in a similar fashion to [[Leicester Forest East]].

This isn't going to help southbound traffic, where the next services are 30 miles away for traffic for the south-east and 50 miles for traffic for the south central. This would have been solved by [[Perry Barr]] services, which were never completed. When you consider this and just how busy this bit of the M6 is (it's the second busiest single stretch of motorway in the UK), it's no surprise that in 1998 Hilton Park was noted for being the busiest service station in the UK. However, since then the M6 Toll has taken a small amount of that traffic away so it's not known where it still lays claim to this title.

Its location has also meant that the M54 needed its own service station - [[Telford]].

===History===
Around the time it became the busiest, Hilton Park was extended to become the first "mini-shopping centre". The extension made it the first site to gain a Cyber Café and the last to get a Trucker's Lounge. Neither of these facilities are still available.

Each side of Hilton Park has a distinctive tower. Its opening was delayed by problems with the sewage system, and when it finally did open the operators were unhappy that the motorway kept being closed as it was being extended. At first both towers held a restaurant with a panoramic view enhanced by the tiered design of the system, but this has since been closed due to fire regulations and now has offices. If this story sounds familiar, it's because [[Rank]] did it again on a much larger scale at [[Forton]]. The staircase for the northbound tower is still used to access the bridge, but you cannot reach the top. On the southbound side the toilets are on the second level beneath the tower, with a second staircase being used.

The name Hilton Park derives from the name of the stately home which the services are built on, which itself is named after the nearby village of Hilton. It was ready to open by 1967 but delays the construction of the motorway meant that it wasn't actually needed until 1970, by which time it was significantly out-of-date.

In the late-'90s, there were plans for a second storey to be added to the car park, creating a second storey entrance too.

For a while Hilton Park was known as Birmingham North before changing back. They changed back apparently because Wolverhampton Council weren't happy with something within their area being named after Birmingham.

===Recent Developments===
An [[M&S]] store opened here on the 15th February 2007 and a [[WHSmith]] store has also opened here, replacing the Retail Store, [[T2]] and [[Birthdays]]. The bridge between the two sites used to be unsafe to walk across due to high levels of asbestos. They thought it might need to be completely rebuilt, which would require closing the M6 below and the Highways Agency wouldn't give Moto permission to do this. They did mark Hilton Park as an "approved truckstop", but this is no longer the case.

In May 2012 and August 2011, Visit England rated the services as 3 stars.

In 2006 Hilton Park won a five star loo award.

Eat & Drink Co. is [[Moto]]'s [[Own brand|self-branded]] alternative for people who don't want fast food. It was re-branded in 2008 from Fresh Express, and like all its predecessors it claims to go without the typical service station scenarios of low-quality food.

Both EDC and the old Fresh Express offer a 'No Quibble Guarantee', and offer 'pick and mix' facilities for children.

It used to be found alongside [[Caffe Ritazza]] for baked goods and coffee, but either [[Costa]] or 'EDC Caffe' (in services were the Costa replaced [[Little Chef]] instead of [[Caffe Ritazza]]) are now normally used.

Under the Granada days, Fresh Express was very poorly ranked for its food quality, with critics calling for it to be investigated "as a matter of urgency".

Neatly playing down its associations with one of the country's busiest motorways by overlooking the rolling hills of Worcestershire are two of the oldest buildings on the network. It won't win any awards for architecture, but it has a job and it does it.

==Trivia==
It seems there will never be an end to the jokes about Frankley's name, especially as it's close to Rubery. It was the first service area of its type when it opened in 1966.

The southbound services have a very odd design, with a restaurant and toilets on the second floor. It's one of very few services to have a full second story, and it backs out over the exit road. This appears to be an attempt to give an optimum view over the levels to the west (with all the facilities being to the east), with the northbound side keeping out the way with a much more typical low-level design. The northbound access road then dropped below the height of the building, allowing a good view from the northbound restaurant.

The [[Greggs]] store opened here on 23rd October 2012.

==Survey Results==
In May 2012, Visit England rated the southbound services as 4 stars and northbound as 3. In August 2011, they gave them both 3 stars.

In late 2006 Frankley starred on the BBC's 'The Money Programme', which described it as 'terrible'. At 2pm it had ran out of food.

In 2006 Frankley was also noted for having the best toilets at any UK motorway service area!

Also in 2006, the services were rated 3/5 by Holiday Which?

The self-service restaurant, range of goods in the shop and staff were all good, but the building was old, dirty, had few external facilities and had a long wait for a poor range of unappetising meals.

One of the oldest services around, Newport Pagnell has done a lot with the little space it has. There isn't a lot of space, especially for southbound lorries, but the hotel has a very 1950s look to it and has received thumbs up for this.

==Trivia==
Newport Pagnell is often claimed to be the first motorway service area. The truth is that [[Watford Gap]] started trading almost a whole year before it, but its facilities were limited. When the services opened they formed the headquarters of certain segments of the Forte business, and today Welcome Break's HQ is only a few miles away in the nearby village.

It had one of the last remaining [[Welcome Lodge]]s, becoming [[Days Inn]] in April 2009. There were plans for the motel to be rebuilt before being rebranded but this never went ahead, so the motel has retained its 1950s American-inspired design. Although the motel is immediately adjacent to the services, it's technically not part of them, and for this reason it is allowed to sell alcohol whereas at most other services it is strictly illegal.

The services received a lot of media attention in September 2007 when a coach took the southbound entrance at 50mph, mistaking it for a junction. It clipped the curb and came to a rest again the building. 30 out of the 33 passengers were hurt, 6 seriously, and the driver was later charged for drink driving and dangerous driving. In The Smiths' song 'Is It Really So Strange?', one of the lines is "I lost my bag at Newport Pagnell", referring to the services. They have also featured in a few scenes of the BBC's '''EastEnders'''.

This was also the test site for [[WHSmith]].

In April 2013, A new-look [[KFC]] opened here on the southbound side, as well as [[Burger King]] making a return.

===Early Days===
The services opened on the 15th August 1960 under the name 'Motorway Services Ltd', which was a join venture between Forte (catering) and [[Blue Star]] (fuel) - the former being involved to help promote their own name. Trusthouse Forte later took over the whole site.

The original plan was that Watford Gap would serve lorries whilst Newport Pagnell served cars, but it didn't work on several grounds: Blue Boar didn't want to build a second site and any other operator wouldn't want to send half their traffic to someone else, plus it wasn't thought to be acceptable that a car driver desperately needing facilities could be deterred from stopping.

When Fortes did open the services in 1960, they were under strict instructions to make the building dull and to separate it from the main carriageway with a lot of trees. When the Government came to make their final inspection, they found that both rules had been broken and the site was seen as a "possible distraction" to drivers. Despite this, the services opened as normal and clearly haven't been seen as that much of a distraction by drivers.

The footbridge between the two sides was included to allow full facilities to be maintained at all times, but it contains an unusual amount of glass so that travellers can stop to watch the passing traffic.

The services were almost immediately seen as being too small. Even today, they are crammed into the local area, however the northbound site has sprawled into the field next to it. Sadly, the same isn't true for the southbound services and they have a huge shortage of space. Recent development means that the northbound site won't be able to expand any further either.

In May 2012, Visit England rated the services as 3 stars. In August 2011, they gave the northbound services as 2 stars and the southbound side 3 stars.

In 2008 the services won a five star loo award.

In 2007, Newport Pagnell northbound won a five star loo award. The southbound side won a four star one.

In 2006, both sides of Newport Pagnell won a four star loo award.

Also in 2006, Holiday Which? rated the services at 2/5.

It was here in 2000 that Egon Ronay made the infamous quote "it's called 'all-day' because it tastes as if it had been hanging around all day".

The first application for a service area here referred to a "drive-in type restaurant".

Markfield is officially known as Leicester, but we'll refer to it as Markfield to avoid confusion with ex-Extra's [[Leicester]] services and Welcome Break's [[Leicester Forest East]], the latter being only six miles away but due to close at some point in the future.

Under [[Moto]] ownership these services gone from having a retail store and a [[Little Chef]], but these were both closed. The [[Little Chef]] was replaced for a short period by a [[Costa]] outlet but this has now been replaced by a [[Coffee Nation]] machine.

It has since been sold by [[Moto]].

Commonly known as the Co-Op the Co-Operative Food is a subsidiary of the Co-Operative Group. The Co-Operative Food is a large chain of small supermarkets and convenience stores some of which are based at service areas.

In March 2009 the Co-Operative Group took over the [[Somerfield]] chain in order to merge with the Co-Operative Food brand. At the time it was stated that all Somerfield's over a period of time would be re-branded as 'The Co-Operative Food'.

All stores now include a [[Costa Express]] machine.

==Trivia==
The site was built by Welcome Break, and then became property of [[Granada]] when they took over the company in 1995. As it wasn't a motorway service area, Granada weren't forced to sell it off, so they kept it and it is now run by their successors, Moto.

In 2007, Welcome Break opened a similar site a few miles down the road in the [[Eurotunnel]], which has since been very successful.

Like [[Coffee Nation]], J.J Beanos provide Coffee machines to a number of outlets, including a number of the [[WHSmith]] convenience stores that also operate on the road network.
They offer a variety of hot drinks, including Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate. Apart from all the Hot Drinks Buisness, J.J Beano's also sell a tempting selection of snacks and cold drinks unlike [[Coffee Nation]]. They may not be as massive as a commercial coffee outlet, but they seem to be doing very well and sell all the right stuff! In 2012, every [[Roadchef]] site gained a JJ Beanos.

One of the oldest services around, Newport Pagnell has done a lot with the little space it has. There isn't a lot of space, especially for southbound lorries, but the hotel has a very 1950s look to it and has received thumbs up for this.

==Trivia==
Newport Pagnell is often claimed to be the first motorway service area. The truth is that [[Watford Gap]] started trading almost a whole year before it, but its facilities were limited. When the services opened they formed the headquarters of certain segments of the Forte business, and today Welcome Break's HQ is only a few miles away in the nearby village.

It had one of the last remaining [[Welcome Lodge]]s, becoming [[Days Inn]] in April 2009. There were plans for the motel to be rebuilt before being rebranded but this never went ahead, so the motel has retained its 1950s American-inspired design. Although the motel is immediately adjacent to the services, it's technically not part of them, and for this reason it is allowed to sell alcohol whereas at most other services it is strictly illegal.

The services received a lot of media attention in September 2007 when a coach took the southbound entrance at 50mph, mistaking it for a junction. It clipped the curb and came to a rest again the building. 30 out of the 33 passengers were hurt, 6 seriously, and the driver was later charged for drink driving and dangerous driving. In The Smiths' song 'Is It Really So Strange?', one of the lines is "I lost my bag at Newport Pagnell", referring to the services. They have also featured in a few scenes of the BBC's '''EastEnders'''.

This was also the test site for [[WHSmith]].

===Early Days===
The services opened on the 15th August 1960 under the name 'Motorway Services Ltd', which was a join venture between Forte (catering) and [[Blue Star]] (fuel) - the former being involved to help promote their own name. Trusthouse Forte later took over the whole site.

The original plan was that Watford Gap would serve lorries whilst Newport Pagnell served cars, but it didn't work on several grounds: Blue Boar didn't want to build a second site and any other operator wouldn't want to send half their traffic to someone else, plus it wasn't thought to be acceptable that a car driver desperately needing facilities could be deterred from stopping.

When Fortes did open the services in 1960, they were under strict instructions to make the building dull and to separate it from the main carriageway with a lot of trees. When the Government came to make their final inspection, they found that both rules had been broken and the site was seen as a "possible distraction" to drivers. Despite this, the services opened as normal and clearly haven't been seen as that much of a distraction by drivers.

The footbridge between the two sides was included to allow full facilities to be maintained at all times, but it contains an unusual amount of glass so that travellers can stop to watch the passing traffic.

The services were almost immediately seen as being too small. Even today, they are crammed into the local area, however the northbound site has sprawled into the field next to it. Sadly, the same isn't true for the southbound services and they have a huge shortage of space. Recent development means that the northbound site won't be able to expand any further either.

==Survey Results==
In May 2012, Visit England rated the services as 3 stars. In August 2011, they gave the northbound services as 2 stars and the southbound side 3 stars.

In 2008 the services won a five star loo award.

In 2007, Newport Pagnell northbound won a five star loo award. The southbound side won a four star one.

In 2006, both sides of Newport Pagnell won a four star loo award.

Also in 2006, Holiday Which? rated the services at 2/5.

It was here in 2000 that Egon Ronay made the infamous quote "it's called 'all-day' because it tastes as if it had been hanging around all day".

When the final plan for the M25 was announced, there was to be four services: the three that are already built and one at Iver, just north of the M4 junction.

The original plans were discussed at a public inquiry and would have been connected to Iver railway station to create a park and ride site. This never materialised, and in 1998 the services were the subject of another public inquiry.

It should be noted that had the services gone ahead they would have been very close to the M4 junction. It looks like the reason why the plans were dropped the first time was that plans to widen the M25 took over and would have got in the way of any plans for services here.

==Alternatives==
In 2009 [[Beaconsfield services]] opened on the M40, and services at [[Cobham]] have recently opened in September 2012. However, even with these two, there is still a long gap between services on the M25.

Services have previously been considered to the south of the M4 as far back as 1983, but they were ruled out to keep the site clear for the Heathrow Terminal 5 junction.

The '''Wansford [[Little Chef]]''' is one of the most iconic sights on the A1. Its distinctive building replaced a pub, Ye Olde Mermaide Inn at the Wansford Crossroads, which was demolished in 1937 owing to the construction of the Wansford Bypass. In the 1970s it became a Little Chef.

In 2007 Little Chef closed the restaurant and it has since become filled with graffiti. There have been numerous plans to redevelop the site but they are often unpopular and don't get very far.

Attempts to make it a listed building have stalled because Little Chef changed the design of the windows.

Since October 2011, the abandoned building has been up for letting on the 'Grice Collins Long' website[http://www.gcllimited.com/our-work/opportunities/wansford/]

Keele was among the first services to be built. The design was favoured by the Ministry of Transport at the time, because of the efficiency and impressiveness of the structure. Unlike its sister site, [[Charnock Richard]], Keele's architecture is distinguished by water towers at each end of the bridge. It has no motel but it's thought that one may have been sited here previously.

Welcome Break recently completed a major refurbishment scheme for the services which included a new [[WHSmith]] store, after a member of Newcastle-under-Lyme's council suggested that the services looked tired and in need of a facelift.

As you approach the services southbound, there is a sign in the central reservation for the services. It's thought that this is original to the opening of this bit of the M6, and Keele is the only services to still have one of these.

During the mid-'80s there was a fire on the bridge at the services which led to the motorway below being closed for several days. This is one of the reasons why today the Highways Agency are reluctant to allow bridges across motorway services. In 2003 there was another fire in the car park which destroyed part of the northbound carriageway.

Always receiving a mixed bag of comments, Southwaite is a fairly old service area on the M6 close to the Scottish Borders. The southbound side is slightly larger and it has a motel as well as a [[M&S|M&S Simply Food]] shop.

Recently dropped its fuel prices so that it is one of very few services which are competing with local garages.

==Trivia==
When the services first opened the building was only on the northbound side, but southbound traffic could access it using the footbridge. It has always been the most northern motorway service area on the M6 (but not in England, [[Washington]] takes that title). In 2008 the motorway was extended northwards and gained a new service area, [[Todhills]], but that is only a [[rest area]], meaning that technically Southwaite can still claim its title.

There are plans to build a second motel here, on the northbound side, but it's not clear what brand it will be as Moto have been looking at brands other than Travelodge.

The site is home to a Tourist Information Centre which holds an large range of information for the whole of Scotland and local areas in England.

Extra (formally known as Extra MSA) are this generation's growing company in the field of motorway services, although their estate has shrunk a bit recently.

They run their services like shopping centres, letting facilities out rather than franchising them. In the past this has created an usual line-up of brands but now it tends to be a mix-up of familiar names. They are the only operator to have all but one of their services located off a junction.

Despite having one of the smallest market shares, in 2010 Extra did the best of all the operators in the [[Loo of the Year Awards]].

==Company History==
After 9 years of growth, Extra fell into administration between March and October 2010. In 2008 Extra were put up for sale, with Macquarie Bank (owners of [[Moto]]) and James Packer (who is actively involved with [[Welcome Break]]) being the two most promising bidders.

===Inception===
Extra came about after the government deregulated motorway services in order to encourage more competition. Before building any services themselves they ran the petrol stations at [[Winchester]] and [[Tibshelf]], [[Roadchef]]'s newest services at the time. Their first site was [[Cambridge]] on the A14 in 2001 and by the time it opened they already had several planning requests pending. They had the advantage of watching the shortfall of the big three operators and when they first started they insisted that they would not use [[franchise]]s, instead creating their own brands to keep the prices down, as well as proclaiming that many of their units would become conference facilities.

===Development===
In 2003 Extra bought two services from [[Margram]], and in 2007 [[Gold Star]] services were finally branded as Extra. This, coupled with the addition of [[Derby|Derby with Burton]] and [[Leicester]], and the proposed services at [[Folkestone]], [[Beaconsfield]] and [[Cobham]], created a fairly large estate.

Since then, several services appear to have reduced their ties with Extra. When it was rescued from administration the non-motorway services were sold off, while self-run facilities were replaced by units let out to catering providers and rival operators (as opposed to self-run facilities branded as a franchise, which is what most other services do).

===Logo History===
Extra have always used the 'cross' symbol pictured below, which if you look carefully has motorway lane markings on it.

Heart of Scotland was originally known as Harthill. It was the first service area in Scotland when it opened in 1978, and when Roadchef took over it became one of the dirtiest sites in the country.

In 2006, it was decided that the best move would be to spend £4.1 million completely rebuilding it, giving it a new operator and name in the process. To be honest, if the heart of Scotland really is a 1960s service station I'm worried for the country.

Heart of Scotland is the only services between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and for this reason it doubles-up as a long-distance bus interchange. The bridge between the two sites used to look like something from a 1960s car park, being old and a very dangerous place at night. After much debating the bridge was finally replaced by a modern, state-of-the-art one, which was lifted in to place on the night of the 3rd October by the largest mobile crane in Europe. There is a photos of it above and [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7652662.stm BBC News] has footage of the new bridge being lifted in to place.

The old bridge is now going to be demolished. The services are one of only two in Scotland which are not marked as a recommended truckstop.

Markfield is officially known as Leicester, but we'll refer to it as Markfield to avoid confusion with ex-Extra's [[Leicester]] services and Welcome Break's [[Leicester Forest East]], the latter being only six miles away but due to close at some point in the future.

Under [[Moto]] ownership these services gone from having a retail store and a [[Little Chef]], but these were both closed. The [[Little Chef]] was replaced for a short period by a [[Costa]] outlet but this has now been replaced by a [[Coffee Nation]] machine.

Eat In is a reformed version of the old Food Connection, acting as Welcome Break's [[Own brand|self-branded]] restaurant. It replaces the even older [[The Granary]] and [[Julie's Pantry]]. This new version offers 'proper' food, cooked in front of you alongside The Bakery and Starbucks (previously [[Coffee Primo]] Express).

It was introduced in 2006 and quickly proved popular, signing a 7-year contract to operate the catering at the Eurotunnel UK Terminal. They are currently considering signing one for the French side.

They regularly advertise their offer 'buy one adult's meal and get a kid's meal free', and released a booklet entitled 'Good Enough to Eat', advertising themselves and [[Coffee Primo]].

Wanting to increase their presence and market share, Greggs opened their first franchised bakery at [[Lymm truckstop]] in early 2012, with high hopes. Following good sales a second store was opened at [[Birch|Birch eastbound]] the following June, and it was then confirmed that most Moto services would get one.

Moto have also been opening franchises at certain [[Extra]] services, where they also run a [[Costa]].

For a while Moto had been using [[Upper Crust]] as a bakery brand, although this sold fewer hot goods and began to lose ground to the other stores. In 2011 they also introduced [[West Cornwall Pasty Co.]], mostly in stands outside the services.

Beaconsfield was granted planning permission in 2005 to much controversy amongst local residents and the local media. It replaces a long-cancelled plan for a service area at [[Abbey Barns]]. The services were announced as the UK's biggest, with the UK's biggest petrol station, although it's thought [[Cobham]] will later take this claim.

One of the biggest fears is that traffic exiting the services will need to cross the busy A355, and the last thing M40 drivers want is a spitting image of [[Cherwell Valley]]. The services were built on a large stretch of woodland and were originally forecast to open in September 2008, but instead opened at 6am on March 17th 2009. An official opening event was held on the 28th May - [http://extraservices.co.uk/news/news01.html details].

There are 675 car parking spaces, 60 HGVs, 12 caravan places and 15 for coaches. There were rumours that the services could feature a park-and-ride site to please local residents, but this turned out to be false.

Unlike most service station fast food stores, the [[McDonald's]] is 24 hours, as is the [[Starbucks]].

Beaconsfield services is one of few sites to have a dedicated police community support officer on site for crime prevention. Swayfield (who own Extra) contribute half of the cost of the officer, backed up by security guards in the evenings.

During the same week, [[Beaconsfield]] services on the M40 were granted planning permission. Cobham will be built on the New Barn Farm site, and construction is currently under way.

Upon granting the permission, John Prescott said there was a "a clear and compelling need". Despite this, it was very controversial, especially as the site will be built on green belt land. The services themselves will be built to the north of the motorway, with an underpass allowing westbound traffic to access them.

When the plans for the services first went public, they were going to have an [[LP4]] restaurant and an [[Etap Hotel]], but these have now been replaced by Welcome Break's [[Eat In]] and [[Days Inn]] respectively. The [[Starbucks]] outlet will also be run by [[Welcome Break]] and is set to become the largest in Europe(!). Meanwhile, the [[Greggs]] outlet and the [[M&S Simply Food]] store will both be run by [[Moto]]. This will be the first time one operator's own brand has been introduced to a rival service station.

==Trivia==
The northbound [[Days Inn]] hotel was closed for a few months in 2007 after the ground floor flooded. For a fairly new service station the exit slips are surprisingly short. Also, be warned that the speed humps in the car park are lethal!

In 2000 a swan made of quartz chips was put in place in at the entrance to the southbound services, with a flowerbed reading 'Welcome to Warwick'. The swan was based on (but different to that of) the old Welcome Break logo, although it hasn't been seen for quite a few years.

The services originally consisted of two competing plans: one by the Department for Transport and the other by [[Mobil]]. Mobil would have included a vehicular bridge at the services, while the DfT considered building a footbridge and later dropped it.

In May 2012 and August 2011 the services were rated as 3 stars by Visit England, who said they had the best toilets.

In 2008 the services won a five star loo award.

In 2006 and again in 2007, the northbound services won a five star loo award and the southbound services won a four star one.

Also in 2006, Holiday Which? rated the services as a 3/5.

Derby South is often referred to as Shardlow, as just a few miles to the west (and slightly to the south of Derby South) lies Extra's new [[Derby and Burton|Derby services]]. The hotel at Derby South is officially named 'Donington', which is also the name of a [[Donington Park|Moto service area]]. Confused? You should be!

The sliproads to the services were built long before the services themselves. Despite the services being quite new, they were built with a [[Little Chef]], even though all the other ones at a Welcome Break had closed years ago. Burtonwood has slowly, over time, become a rather neglected service area. They were badly hurt when the missing J8 was utilised to serve the upcoming '''Omega''' development which has still not commenced. As a result of the junction's position it also serves Gemini Retail Park and as a result the westbound services have now been boarded up and abandoned. Westbound traffic can access the eastbound services via the J8 roundabout (entrance) and the old emergency access road (exit back to J8). This was first proposed in 2000 when the Highways Agency built the new J8, but it didn't happen until about 2008.

Before the closure, Burtonwood had very much become a 'no-go zone' amongst truckers as it was renowned for being dodgy and dangerous. Halving the site meant that some of the facilities had to be lost, including (unusually for a Welcome Break), the lack of a [[Burger King]] and a [[Coffee Primo]]. The old westbound side has now been demolished by Marshall and is currently under development. Currently, the development (known as Gemini 8) consists of a [[Travelodge]], [[Starbucks]] and a [[Harvester]] pub/restaurant. The remaining land is expected to be utilised for commercial purposes (e.g. offices and distribution).

On the other hand, the eastbound site has been refurbished and it has joined up as a coach interchange.

The services consist (or consisted) of two small, octagonal pagoda-style buildings which are visible from the motorway. The design was supposed to make the most of the simple landscape, allowing the buildings to be clearly visible from the road. The roof would have been red, as an early way to advertise the services' branding, but planning permission was refused and instead it was copper, soon colouring to its more memorable green. The buildings are said to be haunted as they are built on the site of a disused airfield where an aircraft crashed in the '50s. Perhaps that's why they didn't do very well!

After being proposed for over 10 years, Cobham has finally been given the go-ahead to be built on the [[M25]], giving the road a much-needed fourth service area - see [[Areas Without Services#West London|Areas Without Services]].

It was scheduled to open in early 2010, but this was put back to early 2012 following various planning issues.

During the same week, [[Beaconsfield]] services on the M40 were granted planning permission. Cobham will be built on the New Barn Farm site, and construction is currently under way.

Upon granting the permission, John Prescott said there was a "a clear and compelling need". Despite this, it was very controversial, especially as the site will be built on green belt land. The services themselves will be built to the north of the motorway, with an underpass allowing westbound traffic to access them.

When the plans for the services first went public, they were going to have an [[LP4]] restaurant and an [[Etap Hotel]], but these have now been replaced by Welcome Break's [[Eat In]] and [[Days Inn]] respectively. The [[Starbucks]] outlet will also be run by [[Welcome Break]] and is set to become their 'largest Starbucks outlet'. Meanwhile, the [[Greggs]] outlet and the [[M&S Simply Food]] store will both be run by [[Moto]]. This will be the first time one operator's own brand has been introduced to a rival service station.

The services are named after The Scotch Corner Interchange, a historic turning point for traffic wishing to head towards Glasgow. For this reason, Scotch Corner is signposted for many miles, even though it has no population and is home to only this service area and the historic Scotch Corner Hotel, on the other side of the junction.

It briefly had an uncertain future while plans to upgrade the A1 were discussed. Although it was unlikely to be in the way, only a finite number of facilities can be provided and it may have been the case that Scotch Corner was rejected in favour of better facilities. [[Todhills]] has provided some precedent for the services not closing, and the whole upgrade itself looks unlikely to happen any time soon.

Soho Coffee Co. was trialled at [[Roadchef]]'s [[Strensham]] southbound as part of a new line-up of brands. The new brand was deemed successful, and Soho Coffee Co. didn't rival [[Costa]], so it's presumed that Soho Coffee Co. will be rolled out to all Roadchef services. As for [[Strensham]], Soho Coffee Co. is a small chain which was founded in nearby Cheltenham.

As well as providing the usual coffee and snacks, Soho Coffee Co. also offers a salad bar and wider range of small meals.

==Trivia==
For quite a while Fleet was the only service area on the M3, and even today it's the only 'proper' services for south-western traffic for the next 130 miles. It was also one of the first to go for a more rural design, with a tightening budget and environmental concerns not allowing for the more striking designs that had been used so far.

It's one of two Welcome Break services which have a McDonald's. In 1995 Welcome Break announced that following its success they were going to open a McDonald's at all of their services, but this process was stopped after Welcome Break was bought by [[Granada]] who already had a deal with Burger King.

The footbridge at Fleet was built with this section of motorway, but the rest of the services weren't built for a few years, so for a while we were left with a bridge connecting two sides of wasteland.

Fleet were one of the first services to try out Welcome Break's new look in 2006. It also appears to have quite a lot of Facebook groups - I count eight, most of which are complimentary.

On BBC Southern Counties Radio, Jeremy Clarkson described the "Fleet cheat" where you use the services' back exit to avoid queues on the motorway, but he was told there were now rising bollards in use, to which he suggested getting a Hummvee. They also featured in an early episode of 'Waterloo Road'.

The BBC Domesday website suggests that in 1986, 60% of the services' trade happened on the westbound side.

The [[Waitrose]] store on the Northbound side opened on 27th July 2012.

==Survey Results==
In May 2012 and August 2011, Visit England rated the northbound services as 3 stars and the southbound side as 4 stars.

In 2008 the services won a five star loo award.

In 2006 and again in 2007, the toilets at the petrol station were given a three-star loo award. The services themselves were rated four-star.

The services were inspected by the AA on the 24th and 25th of March 2007. These are their results:

Extra (formally known as Extra MSA) are this generation's growing company in the field of motorway services, although their estate has shrunk a bit recently.

They run their services like shopping centres, letting facilities out rather than franchising them. In the past this has created an usual line-up of brands but now it tends to be a mix-up of familiar names. They are the only operator to have all but one of their services located off a junction.

Despite having one of the smallest market shares, in 2010 Extra did the best of all the operators in the [[Loo of the Year Awards]].

==Company History==
After 9 years of growth, Extra fell into administration between March and October 2010. In 2008 Extra were put up for sale, with Macquarie Bank (owners of [[Moto]]) and James Packer (who is actively involved with [[Welcome Break]]) being the two most promising bidders.

===Inception===
Extra came about after the government deregulated motorway services in order to encourage more competition. Before building any services themselves they ran the petrol stations at [[Winchester]] and [[Tibshelf]], [[Roadchef]]'s newest services at the time. Their first site was [[Cambridge]] on the A14 in 2001 and by the time it opened they already had several planning requests pending. They had the advantage of watching the shortfall of the big three operators and when they first started they insisted that they would not use [[franchise]]s, instead creating their own brands to keep the prices down, as well as proclaiming that many of their units would become conference facilities.

===Development===
In 2003 Extra bought two services from [[Margram]], and in 2007 [[Gold Star]] services were finally branded as Extra. This, coupled with the addition of [[Derby|Derby with Burton]] and [[Leicester]], and the proposed services at [[Folkestone]], [[Beaconsfield]] and [[Cobham]], created a fairly large estate.

Since then, several services appear to have reduced their ties with Extra. When it was rescued from administration the non-motorway services were sold off, while self-run facilities were replaced by units let out to catering providers and rival operators (as opposed to self-run facilities branded as a franchise, which is what most other services do).

===Logo History===
Extra have always used the 'cross' symbol pictured below, which if you look carefully has motorway lane markings on it.

Long after the other operators, in 2009 Extra started putting brand names alongside their own on road signs in an attempt to get extra customers. Names include [[Starbucks]], [[M&S]] and [[McDonald's]].
