Gold Star is the original brand created by Swayfields, who are better known as the parent company of Extra.

Swayfields developed motorway service areas at Tibshelf and Winchester, selling the main part of each to another operator and then running the petrol stations under their own Gold Star brand. Each Gold Star site had a Delifrance, a One Stop shop, and Texaco fuel.

Swayfields later acquired Cullompton, and this became the third Gold Star site. Few changes were made from its previous layout, and most people did not notice that it was now Gold Star: it kept its old McDonald's branding.

In 2007, Extra removed the Gold Star branding completely. The petrol stations changed to Shell and BP at the same time.
