As part of a general look at services in the Berkshire/Buckinghamshire area, two applications were made to build services at M4 J8/9, under the name Maidenhead.
The first was from an unknown developer and would have been located in the north-east quadrant of the junction, however the application states that it would only be accessible to eastbound traffic (possibly to go with one of the plans at Great Wood).
The second application was from Granada and would have seen a full service station built on the southern side of the junction. A variation of this proposed would have only allowed entrance from the M4 westbound.
There has been a long history of battles to get services built in and around the Berkshire area. Eventually Reading opened, but it was just a drop in the ocean. The Maidenhead plan became part of a long investigation, but the only services to come out of it was Cobham on the M25.
