Trivia and History

Flat-roofed building with a sign saying Skiach Services RESTAURANT.
Skiach Services Restaurant, pictured in 2019.

The service area was built with this part of the A9 in the 1980s, when the road was re-routed to bypass the village of Evanton.

Gleaner refurbished the forecourt in 2015, adding a Costa Express machine to the shop. Scottish bakers Harry Gow supplied bakery products to a new food to go offering. The refurbishment was marked with an official opening day on 14 June 2015. The shop later gained SPAR branding in 2020.

The Skiach Services Restaurant closed in August 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. It reopened on 12 April 2021 as Am Bothan Community Café, but then closed again on 27 March 2022, citing poor trade. Access to shower facilities have been lost as a result of the closure.

The restaurant reopened as MacAlpine's Café on 18 March 2024. Access to shower facilities were reintroduced as a result.

The picnic area here used to feature a large teapot and teacup in the centre of it, promoting the restaurant here, but this was later removed.
