Trivia and History
A garage has been positioned here since the 1960s and was originally positioned directly on the A12 before the Brentwood bypass was built.
In 1990, Norfolk House Group built a Kelly's Kitchen restaurant next to the existing filling station and their partners Petrofina took over this at the same time. They had also planned to add a 49-bed hotel between the restaurant and the A12 bypass but this was refused planning permission.
The Little Chef restaurant closed in around 2005 and is now Mizu Noodle Bar. A snack bar is also now often situated in its car park.
In 2012, Total sold the filling station to Shell following their nationwide shutdown and the site reopened in summer 2012 with their own-brand Select. The filling station now provides the main facility for motorists.
A little further along Brook Street is a former Forte Posthouse which was built in 1991 when Forte took over Kelly's Kitchen. This is now a Holiday Inn.
