Trivia and Details
On the public road next to the services are bays for lorries to park, as well as a separate toilet block.
A mile to the west of here is the Willoughby Hedge Café, positioned in a lay-by next to another toilet block.
In the late 1960s two Little Chefs opened on the A303, one two miles down the road at Chicklade and one here at Willoughby Hedge. It was known as the West Knoyle branch and appears to have opened in 1968, taking over an existing café built in 1953. This was next to a forecourt which appears to have been there since the 1940s, and was branded Shell at the time.
Being a busy holiday route, Granada saw the potential of the restaurant and re-built it in around 1998 with light, weathered stone cladding and large windows. In 2006 it gained a Coffee Tempo! for a number of years, and later gained a Little Chef Express. In 2015 parts of the building were painted bright red. The restaurant had a very high turnover, but a refinancing deal meant it was spending most of its income on rent.
