Trivia and History

Aerial view of A19 Wolviston.
The green fields just before the service area was built.

The site of the service area was identified in 1991 by Fairhurst land developers. The first drawings showed the entry roundabout further east than it is now, with a lodge in the south-west corner, with a shop in the north-west corner and a picnic area in the north-east corner. The car park was in the middle with lorry parking at the north end, and the petrol station is roughly in the same place. The 'missing' A19 southbound slip road was provided as part of the project.

What was actually built became a free-for-all retail area. A McDonald's was built in one corner, and then in 2000 the Billingham branch of Little Chef was built in the centre, next to a small garden. This was one of their last sites to open, but it closed in 2005 and was left empty for a few month, with Little Chef still paying the rent. It was demolished the following year and replaced by KFC, with the garden becoming car parking.

The Premier Inn was previously a Holiday Inn Express. This was extended several times.

In late 2012, the filling station changed from Shell to BP. In late 2017, MFG acquired the filling station and re-branded the shop from Nisa Local to Londis.

More recently, a Costa drive thru was built in one of the only remaining grass areas at the very edge of the site and a Domino’s Pizza store was added next to the entrance road. 2 InstaVolt electric vehicle charging points were later installed in the Domino's Pizza car park.

In January 2021, planning permission was granted for MFG to install 8 electric vehicle charging points on their forecourt. These charging points are expected to be installed in 2021.
