A34 Old Photos

In this gallery I have some old photos of the A34 I have been sent which I wanted to share with you - so here we go. They are shown in chronological order, though by coincidence they go broadly south-to-north.

Tap each thumbnail to enlarge it.

The old roundabout between the A34 and A303, with the Bullington Cross Inn in the distance. 1965.

Getting closer to the roundabout. That sign says "slow down now".

Same junction, looking down the A303. That sign says "keep left unless overtaking".

Three Maids Hill, junction of the A34 and A272 near Winchester, under construction in 1967. Two slip roads have been opened to allow traffic to join the old A34 north of here, which is still single carriageway. The dual carriageway north of here didn't arrive until the 1980s, at which point another roundabout was added to this junction. The road to the south is the new bypass of Winchester.

A train crosses the A34 as the Winchester Bypass is extended in the 1960s.

The Tufton Crossroads under construction - this junction was finally closed in 2017. A new carriageway was placed next to the existing one.

Old signs on the approach to the three arches at Litchfield.

Looking through one of the arches.

A dual carriageway with bollards forms to highlight the bend as the road goes under the arch. The sign at the end says "keep left".

The arch was knocked down in stages to make way for the new A34.

The newly straightened road, with the old road to the right.

The former arch has now been demolished, leaving the straightened road.

The dual carriageway section comes to an end.

The A34 Winchester Road runs through Whitchurch village, before the bypass opened.

Lorries struggle with the narrow road in Whitchurch.

The roundabout in the middle of Whitchurch, with signs calling it the A34 and the B3400.

The old A34 descends down the hill into Whitchurch.

A contraflow on the A34 at Seven Barrows, for the widening of the road, in 1989.

Roadworks for the construction of the Whitway Diversion, at Beacon Hill. Traffic is being routed up the southbound onslip.

The excellent Sainsbury Archive has inadvertently released this picture of the A34 in Newbury in 1994, showing typical traffic conditions on the northbound carriageway.
