An unbuilt service area at Hatfield
There are many service stations which were planned but never built. There are two types of unbuilt service area: the older ones were designed (and usually half-built) by the Department for Transport, who would then bail out if they thought the plan was unnecessary or too unpopular. Since 1992, services are put forward by developers, many of whom repeatedly create plans which are instantly rejected.

It's possible to drive past almost all of these sites without suspecting anything, so this section of the site exists to allow as much information as possible to be collected on various once-planned services, such as where they are, what they would have been like, why they didn't go ahead and what they're like now. They have all been planned in detail at one point or another, it's just that those plans are very hard to track down!
