M4 Old Photos

In this gallery I have some old photos of the M4 I have been sent which I wanted to share with you - so here we go. They are shown roughly in junction number order.

Tap each thumbnail to enlarge it.

An English one to start - looking east at J5 in the 1970s. The B470 on the right is shown in its original configuration, with three lanes and a cycle path: a strange decision for a newly-built road.

A contraflow in place between J24 and J25 in 1982, with new noise barrier fencing on the left.

Looking west towards J28, after the road had been widened through the tight space.

The M4 being built through Earlswood at J42 in 193, with measures in place to manage the deep cutting.

The A48 being diverted during the construction of M4 J47.

Work on M4 J47 in around 1976. Note the lack of Swansea West services.

Work on the roundabout at the western end of the M4 is nearly complete, with the A48 dual carriageway coming to an end in the distance.
