The refurbished Little Chef.
The service area here was an example of Happy Eater stepping up a gear with their business.
In 1974, Happy Eater opened their first branch on what is now the old A3 in Send, which they called 'Ripley'. The Wisley Bypass opened in 1976 and would have seen passing trade drop, but Happy Eater appeared to be content with that.
In 1983 Happy Eater decided to move the Ripley branch to the new A3, where a large service area was built with Happy Eaters in both sides. By now many other Happy Eaters had opened, and it was clear they wanted to focus on major roads and keep all their buildings in the same style.
One of these two new Happy Eaters was the 50th to open at the time. To celebrate this and the investment, Princess Michael of Kent was invited to a promotion event in the restaurant in March 1985.
These restaurants were converted to Little Chefs, which gained Burger Kings in 1996.
In 2007, the northbound restaurantHistory was closed. This was later converted into a Starbucks store. The southbound Little ChefHistory received a thorough refurbishment as part of Wonderfully British, where it gained a Good To Go. It closed in 2017 and was converted by Euro Garages to a Starbucks.
In the late 1990s, the filling stations were redeveloped by BP. The northbound forecourt sales shop is due to be demolished and replaced by a new two-storey sales building with upstairs seating for Wild Bean Café customers.
