Trivia and History
In around 1990, a Mobil petrol station was built next to the A12 eastbound, immediately east of here. It had a sharp entrance, leading to a wide forecourt with a long roof. It was never officially regarded as a service area, and was just a facility beside the A12.
This was joined by the Colchester North branch of Little Chef, which gained a Coffee Stop. In 1996 it was converted to a Little Chef Express, with a short-lived blue colour scheme. Space was left for a third unit, and in 1991 a Travelodge was proposed here but it was refused planning permission.
Mobil became BP in 1996. The Little Chef closed in 2006 and was demolished soon after, leaving just the poles which held the sign.
In around 2010, work started on the new exit for Colchester Stadium. The old petrol station was closed and demolished, and a new BP was built at the new junction. Space was left for a large McDonald's to open a few years later.
