Trivia and History
In around 1990, a Mobil petrol station was built next to the A12 eastbound, immediately east of here. It had a sharp entrance, leading to a wide forecourt with a long roof. It was never officially regarded as a service area, and was just a facility beside the A12.
This was joined by the Colchester North branch of Little Chef, which gained a Coffee Stop. In 1996 it was converted to a Little Chef Express, with a short-lived blue colour scheme. Space was left for a third unit, and in 1991 a Travelodge was proposed here but it was refused planning permission.
Mobil became BP in 1996.
In 2001, Colchester Borough Council submitted an outline planning application for the relocation of the service area to the new A12 junction 28 which would later become the main access point to Colchester Stadium. Permission was granted in 2006 with the Little Chef closing in the same year. The former restaurant building was demolished soon after, leaving just the totem poles.
In around 2010, work started on the new exit for Colchester Stadium. At this point, BP closed and demolished their original filling station at the eastbound site and a built a new site at the new junction. The new filling station opened as a BP Connect site with a M&S Simply Food store and Wild Bean Café.
When the new filling station was built, land to the west was left for further development. In 2012, McDonald's submitted plans for a two-storey drive-thru restaurant to fill that space. This opened in late 2013.
