Services on the A30/A303

Below is a list of all the signposted services on the A30 and A303. Forming a major route between London and the South West (Basingstoke and Hayle for the purposes of this list), these two roads have a long history in carrying holiday-makers, and as such have attracted a lot of facilities.

The following roads meet either the A30 or the A303, and also have services guides on this website: M3, M5, A34, A35 and the A38.

The following services have closed and been removed from this guide: Weyhill.

Notes: A Little ChefHistory was built here in the 1970s, and rebuilt in 1985. A Little Chef Lodge became the Travelodge. The restaurant closed in July 2017 and is now a Starbucks.

A building firm and motorhome park are accessed from within the services.

The services operated in tandem with The Buck (below).

The Buck

Co-operative Group operate the filling station
Notes: Solstice Park is a large amount of land on the outskirts of Amesbury, which became ripe for development. A number of industrial units and restaurants can now be found around this junction, with a couple of 'services' signs pointing to the centre. When traffic is flowing well the easy access to the A303 is a bonus, but for the restaurants a lot of the appeal of the site probably comes from the regular, severe queues on the westbound carriageway here.

Despite the apparently haphazard nature of the services, there are still a number of HGV bays provided by the filling station. This is a former Texaco filling station, now ran under the Co-op brand.

The park is home to six Charlotte Moreton sculptures.

The services is only signed to westbound traffic but can be easily accessed from the eastbound side. Signage may have been deliberately left out to avoid competing with Countess (below).

Shell operate the filling station
Euro Garages operate the restaurants
Notes: Just a mile west of Solstice (above), this site is located on the A303 eastbound, but immediately after a roundabout and with a link back to it. Inside the services is an odd road layout, offering parking spaces in many different places.

The Little Chef opened in 1990. It gained a Burger King, then Harry Ramsden's and Caffe Ritazza as part of Little Chef Choices. A Coffee Tempo! was later added. In 2011, it received a thorough refurbishment as part of the Wonderfully British project, where it gained a Good To Go.

The Little Chef is due to close and be replaced by Starbucks in 2017.

The facilities normally promote themselves as Amesbury, after the nearby town. However, the roundabout and services are officially called Countess. The motel here is very close to Stonehenge and sometimes takes that name.

Willoughby Hedge

Westbound only. Single site located at a junction on the Westbound side only. 24 hours: The filling station is open 24 hours.  Westbound between Amesbury and Ilchester, Wiltshire, BA12 6AQ. (Google Maps)

Euro Garages operate this site
Notes: A Little ChefHistory here closed on 12 June 2017, it had a Coffee Tempo! for some time. It reopened as a Starbucks on 4 August 2017.

The services can be accessed from both sides of the road, but are only signed westbound to discourage traffic turning across what can be quite a dangerous junction.

There is an outdoor toilet block attached to the petrol station.

Notes: Often mixed up with the next service area along - this one is next to Hazelgrove Roundabout and often takes that name. It is a small, tight site with a McDonald's and a petrol station, but space for a few HGV bays. The filling station was formerly operated by Chartman Retail.

Camel Hill

Single site located between junctions. Closes at night.  Between Amesbury and Ilchester, Somerset, BA22 7PH. (Google Maps)
Mattia American Dinerwebsite, LavazzaShell, Londis, Costa Express, Autogas LPG
MFG operate the filling station
Notes: The restaurant here was originally the Frying Pan Cafe but it was damaged by a fire in 1984. It was then demolished and replaced by a Happy Eater, which later became a Little Chef. The Little Chef closed in 2008 and is now the diner, which has been covered with distinctive Elvis memorabilia.

The petrol station was once operated by Shell directly, but was sold to MFG, who upgraded the forecourt and shop throughout mid-2016, changing the shop from Select Shop to Londis in the process. At the back of the services is a fenced off area, which appears to have been an exit through to Gason Lane.

The services come about two miles before another petrol station and former Welcome Break site at Camel Cross. That one was converted to a Happy Eater too, but was closed in favour of this one.

Podimore

Single site located at a junction. 24 hours: The filling station is open 24 hours.  Between Amesbury and Ilchester, Somerset, BA22 8JG. (Google Maps)

Notes: A large, purpose-built service area opened by Forte in 1995. Coffee Tempo! was replaced by Little Chef Express, although there are still signs for it if you know where to look. The side of the building was given bright red cladding as part of the Wonderfully British refurbishment.

Townsend

Notes: There is a 'secret exit' onto Bearley Lane. The diner, formerly Jolly Diner, acquired new owners in 2012 and was given a total refurbishment.

Single site located at a junction. Closes at night.  Between Ilchester and Ilminster, Somerset, TA14 6RA. (Google Maps)
The Cartgate Lodge CafewebsitePicnic Tables, Toilets, Tourist InformationHGV parking available
Highways England operate this site
Notes: Technically this is a picnic area, but it is officially endorsed in the sense that it's designed and run by Highways England themselves. It used to offer just parking for a number of vehicles with a wooded picnic area in the centre, where tourist information and a daytime-only toilet block could be found. The Highways Agency (now Highways England) tended to avoid building places like this because it has little in common with their main task of maintaining motorways. Eventually, additional catering facilities were provided, which gave Highways England a reliable on-the-ground contact.

Stoke-sub-Hamdon

Westbound only. Single site located between junctions on the Westbound side only. Closes at night.  Westbound between Cartgate and Ilminster, Somerset, TA14 6RA. (Google Maps)
BP, Londis, Costa Express
Notes: This forecourt is only half a mile away from the Cartgate Roundabout (above). It is only a small filling station, meaning it provides exactly what Cartgate is missing.

Ilminster

Single site located at a junction. 24 hours: The filling station is open 24 hours.  At Ilminster, Somerset, TA19 9PT. (Google Maps)

Euro Garages operate the restaurants
Notes: The restaurant here was originally a Happy Eater, which became a Little Chef and gained a Travelodge. It became a Little Chef Choices in 2002 seeing it gain a Harry Ramsden's and Caffe Ritazza, then later Coffee Tempo!.

In 2012, the restaurant received a thorough refurbishment, gaining a Good To Go. It is due to close and be replaced by a KFC soon.

It is one of few a-road services to have motorway-style 'Tiredness Can Kill' signs on each approach to it, suggesting there is a history of fatigue-related problems here.

It is located on the A358, but not the major road that leads to Taunton - that is a fourth (of five) exit from this roundabout. The roundabout is called 'Southfields', but 'Ilminster' is the name promoted by the facilities.

The A303 has several signposted 'local facilities', including some signed from the opposite side of the roundabout.

Notes: It is located on the former route of the A30, back when it was the White House Transport Cafe, dating back to the 1930s.

The services were recently rebuilt and now feature parking for over 150 cars as well as a new Budgens store, which at the time was a rare sight on the roads. Before the rebuild, the services had a Premier store on the forecourt.

Nisa Local replaced Budgens in April 2015.

Notes: Also known as Sourton Down. It initially opened as a picnic area in around 1990, but is now one of the largest services in this region.

The Shell filling station underwent a major refurbishment from August to November 2014 and reopened with a large Deli2go counter. A Little ChefHistory closed in October 2017 and is due to become a Starbucks soon.

The Burger King here closed for a time but has now reopened.

It was refurbished in 2017 and now includes a Londis again. It is a former Shell filling station site.

Notes: It is also home to a car dealer. Until 2008 the Starbucks was the Chiverton Cross Little Chef and Burger King.

Although both are operated by MRH, the two petrol stations are in direct competition with each other.

In 2012, the Total filling station was closed down because of the competition and was turned into a second Esso filling station. The original Esso forecourt is known as 'Chiverton Cross' and the second is known as 'Three Burrows'.

The Little Chef closed in 2004 due to increased competition. Travelodge then built a hotel in the former car park of the Little Chef in 2006 and plans were made for the Little Chef to reopen to coincide with the hotel opening.

However, the owners of Little Chef got into financial difficulties and the restaurant remains closed to this day.
