Charnock Richard services

The services on a dire day.

The bridge

The services straddling the M6. That bridge is quite a blocky thing, but inside it's a lot nicer.

The services in the '60s

The services, looking south, at some time in the 1960s. It appeared on the front of a postcard from that time, when the service station was a fundamental part of the holiday itself.

The bridge in the '60s

A similar view, looking south. The generic caption of 'the restaurant' limits this almost entirely to 1963.

Another 1960s postcard

Another view of the services in the '60s. What were those people doing, sitting on the bank?

The restaurant in the 1960s

Looking inside the typical 1960s restaurant. Would it be fair to say Fortes were proud of these services?

Trivia:

Charnock Richard was the first service area to open on the M6. It opened in 1963 and like other services from its time, the fast food is on the bridge. In 2006, the bridge had to be restructured because it was close to falling on to the motorway!

That will be fun when it's busy. And will we get told how to recognise the thousands of different ID coachdrivers can carry? Nope.

Heh, forgot to say it's because we're going back to a manual system!

Told you I was only in training.
